ingredients required:
thuvar dhal: 1/4 kg
any vegetable: 1/2 kg
grated coconut: a little
green chilli: 5 to 6
coriander seeds: a little
pepper: 4 nos
cumin seeds: 1/2 spoon
jaggery piece: one
tamarind: a lemon size
salt: as per your taste
mustard: for seasoning
roasted bengal gram: a little
oil: 2 spoons
method of preparation:
wash the vegetables well. pour 2litres of water in a vessel and keep the same on stove. when the water begins boils add vegetables, and a pinch of turmeric powder and close the vessel with lid. by the time the dhal is baked , pound coriander seed , roasted beaten bengal gram red chillis pepper and jeera in grinding stone when dhal and vagetable are baked half. add the pounded powder and the squeezed tamarind juice then add grated coconut , jaggery, salt and mix it well. after the sambar is boiled season the same with mustard and asafoetida .
you can use the pounded powder or grinded mixture.
there are various types of sambars like onion, potato, ladies finger, brinjal etc.
